Navigating Healthcare: Tips for Students

Navigating Healthcare: Tips for Students

Welcome back to Lubbock college students! We're so glad you're back in town, and can't wait to watch you thrive this semester and throughout 2025. We've gathered some tips to help you navigate healthcare in your home away from home.

Understand the Importance of your Health

Your health is your most valuable asset. You need to both understand it and prioritize it, giving your body what it needs to help you be successful throughout your college career and beyond.

Prioritize movement

Daily movement is crucial for both your mental and physical health. Start easy; don't try to do too much all at once. Small habits make a big difference, especially when you stick with them over time. Don't burn yourself by starting too hot. Start off small -- take a walk, try out a yoga class, or pick up a game of volleyball or basketball!

Prioritize sleep

Sleep is critical. Good, restful sleep affects academic performance and improves memory, learning, and focus, mental and emotional well-being with reduced stress and anxiety, and your physical health with an improved immune system and recovery. Start out by limiting caffeine in the afternoons and your screen time before bed.

Prioritize nutrition

Navigating healthy eating can get overwhelming, especially if you're living on campus without a full kitchen. Eating healthy is possible, even on a budget. Try to opt for more whole food options and try meal prepping!

Understand your Insurance Coverage

Your insurance plan gives you an idea of what you'll pay at the doctor's office and which providers are in your network (AKA providers that your insurance will pay for). If you know you have insurance but don't know the details, get your insurance card, give us a call at Lubbock Primary Care. We'll let you know whether or not we accept your insurance and give you an idea of what you'll pay for your visit.

Find a Primary Care Provider

Finding and seeing a primary care provider regularly is vital to maintaining your health. Benefits of a PCP:

  • Routine, yearly check-ups help identify any potential medical issues early when they're easiest to treat. This includes screenings for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues, and more.
  • Once you've established care with a PCP, we're just an easy call away when you get sick and need an appointment ASAP. Our University location conveniently accepts walk-ins every weekday for this reason! We can help you navigate and treat cold/flu symptoms, STIs, UTIs, rashes, and more.
  • Your PCP can also counsel you on healthy lifestyle tips for things like diet, exercise, and stress management.
  • Some insurances require a referral from your PCP to see specialists like dermatologists, allergists, and gynecologists. We're the perfect place to start as you begin to navigate certain medical conditions. We get you exactly where you need to go!
